Public Image Limitless

No rules. No limits. No hangover.

Inspired by Public Image Ltd's anarchic post-punk energy, John Lydon's defiant reinvention, and the electric chaos of a 2026 live show, this mocktail layers bold, clashing flavors that somehow work — just like PIL's music. A sharp, sour tamarind base crashes into smoky lapsang souchong tea, cut through with fiery ginger and a neon blue-to-red gradient that mirrors the band's iconic, confrontational stage lighting. It's abrasive, brilliant, and completely unforgettable.

Mocktail 🚫🍸Glass: Tall highball glassGarnish: A dehydrated blood orange wheel + a single safety pin clipped to the rimPrep: 6 minutesDifficulty: Medium

Ingredients

  • 2 oz tamarind concentrate (unsweetened)
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz strong-brewed lapsang souchong tea (cooled)
  • 3/4 oz honey-ginger syrup (equal parts honey and water simmered with 1-inch fresh ginger)
  • 4 oz blood orange sparkling water
  • 1/4 tsp activated charcoal powder
  • 1/2 oz butterfly pea flower tea (cooled, for layering)
  • Crushed ice

Instructions

  1. Brew a strong cup of lapsang souchong tea and a separate cup of butterfly pea flower tea. Allow both to cool completely.
  2. In a cocktail shaker, combine the tamarind concentrate, fresh lime juice, lapsang souchong tea, honey-ginger syrup, and activated charcoal powder.
  3. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 15 seconds — channel your inner Lydon.
  4. Fill a tall highball glass to the top with crushed ice.
  5. Strain the shaken mixture over the crushed ice — it will appear a deep, murky black.
  6. Slowly top with blood orange sparkling water and gently stir just once to blend.
  7. For the signature gradient finale, using a bar spoon held just above the surface, slowly pour the butterfly pea flower tea over the back of the spoon so it floats and bleeds into the drink — it will shift from deep indigo at the top to crimson-black below as it mixes with the acidic lime.
  8. Garnish with a dehydrated blood orange wheel and clip a safety pin to the rim of the glass for full PIL attitude.
