The Spiritus Rex
The king of all cocktails — a love letter to the spirit itself.
A bold, self-referential celebration of alcohol in its purest forms — grain, grape, and cane — united in one glass. The Spiritus Rex (Latin for "King of Spirits") layers aged whiskey, cognac, and aged rum into a stirred, spirit-forward sipper, brightened by a whisper of aromatic bitters and a honeyed orange liqueur that ties the trio together. It's the cocktail equivalent of a master distiller's manifesto — complex, warming, and unapologetically alcoholic.
Ingredients
- 1 oz aged bourbon whiskey (e.g., Woodford Reserve)
- 1 oz VSOP cognac (e.g., Rémy Martin)
- 1 oz aged dark rum (e.g., Diplomatico Reserva)
- 0.5 oz Grand Marnier (orange liqueur)
- 0.25 oz raw honey syrup (2:1 honey to warm water)
- 2 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters
- 1 dash Peychaud's bitters
- Large ice sphere or block, for serving
- Ice, for stirring
Instructions
- Combine the bourbon, cognac, dark rum, Grand Marnier, honey syrup, Angostura bitters, and Peychaud's bitters in a mixing glass.
- Fill the mixing glass generously with ice.
- Stir steadily for 30–40 seconds until the drink is well-chilled and properly diluted — do not rush this step.
- Place a large ice sphere or hand-cut block into a chilled crystal rocks glass.
- Strain the cocktail over the ice using a Hawthorne or julep strainer.
- Hold an orange peel (skin-side down) over the glass and firmly express the oils across the surface of the drink.
- Drape the orange peel elegantly over the ice sphere.
- Skewer a Luxardo cherry and rest it against the peel as a final flourish.
- Serve immediately and sip slowly — this drink rewards patience.
